Who will take care of Ram statue, asks Ayodhya priest

The Yogi government’s ambitious project to install the tallest statue of Lord Ram in Ayodhya is facing opposition from Mahant Satyendra Das, the head priest of the makeshift temple at the disputed site.

The Yogi government’s ambitious project to put in the tallest statue of Lord Ram in Ayodhya is facing opposition from Mahant Satyendra Das, the head priest of the makeshift temple at the disputed website.

“Lord Ram’s place is in a very temple and not in the open,” said Das, who has been performing puja of Ram Lalla (the child Ram) at the makeshift Ram Janmabhoomi temple in Ayodhya for over 25 years.

Das’s comment comes as the state government has approved a project to put in a statue of Lord Ram in Ayodhya. Chief minister Yogi Aditayanth is likely to put the foundation stone of the project during his visit to Ayodhya on Deepotsav on November 6 or succeeding day on the festive occasion of Diwali.

“The Lord’s sculpture in the open is not acceptable. who is going to take care of the statue and perform daily puja of the deity?” asked Satyendra Das, who could be a former sanskrit lecturer.

Explaining his purpose, he said: “Lord Ram’s statue isn't a political sculpture. it's not like any alternative statue of an official put in across the country. You very well know the condition of the statues of politicians. no one takes care of them. no one wants Lord Ram’s sculpture to meet a similar fate.”

“Maryada Purshottam Sri Ram ki doordasha mat kariya ,” the head priest pleaded.

In case, the government goes ahead with its proposal to put in the sculpture of Lord Ram, then the head priest has some suggestions.

“We don't would like the tallest statue of Lord Ram. Its height should be specified it will be simply maintained and it should also have a correct cover,” he prompt.

Commenting on the excitement about construction of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, Das said, “If Ram Lala wants, only then can there be a temple in Ayodhya. If He does not need, then He can still keep beneath a canvas.”

He also said he felt that bringing down the Babri house of worship caused a lot of hurt to Hindus than to the Muslims.

Lord Ram’s statue should not become a political info, Das added.

The Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas has also demanded proper maintenance of the proposed sculpture of Lord Ram.

“Lord Ram’s sculpture is not simply the other sculpture. It cannot be put in and forgotten. the government must guarantee its correct maintenance,” said Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, head of the Nyas, that has spearheaded the Ram Mandir movement across the country.

A section of saints in Ayodhya feels that state government is now pushing the proposal to install the statue of Lord Ram ardently because the Supreme Court has pushed back the hearing of the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri masjid title suit to january next year.
